About ERP
The English Readiness Program (ERP) at LBA is a year-long program designed to help international students arrive at English proficiency. Students will be taught conversation, listening, writing and reading in classroom and real-life settings to prepare them for academic and social success as an LBA student.
Requirements
To qualify for admission, you must meet the following requirements:
Be between 14 and 16 years old
Have scored below the minimum score on an English proficiency exam
Show good academic performance and citizenship, demonstrated through your letters of recommendation and transcripts
Agree to the requirements specified in the LBA student handbook
To apply for the program, you must complete the following steps:
Fill out an application on the Laurelbrook website
Provide 3 letters of recommendation
Send your latest transcript
Program Format
ERP is divided into 3 stages: Summer, Semester I and Semester II. The first two stages provide dedicated instruction in English communication as well as immersive classes and laboratories. In the Semester II stage, students will transition out of ERP courses and join the regular academic courses while being followed by the ERP tutor.
STAGE 1: Summer (Starts on June 6, 2022)
4 hours of daily classroom instruction in:
Conversation
Reading comprehension
Writing
Grammar
American history and culture
4 hours of daily laboratory activities
STAGE 2: Semester I (Starts on August 9, 2021)
4 hours of daily classroom instruction in the following areas:
Conversational skills
Reading comprehension and writing
Grammar
Bible I (with the general student body)
Math (with the general student body)
An elective course (with the general student body, ex: media production, music, etc.)
4 hours of daily laboratory activities
Weekly outreach opportunities
Access to the ERP tutor
STAGE 3: Semester II (Starts in January, 2023)
Immersion in regular classes with the general student body
4 hours of daily laboratory activities
Weekly outreach opportunities
Continued access to the ERP tutor
Students should plan on arriving on campus by June 5, 2023.
Students who prove to have the English level necessary to begin the school year as an academic student will be placed directly into academic courses after the summer session. They will continue to have access to the ERP tutor.
Trips
Students participating in the full ERP program will enjoy 2 cultural trips off campus along with day trips. You will visit the surrounding areas while learning about the American civil war. At the end of the Summer Stage, you will experience an authentic, American-style camping trip. During Semester I, we will explore our nation’s capital city, Washington D.C. Here, you will learn about US history and government while seeing some of our nation’s most important landmarks.
